Skin vs. Lace: What's the Difference?
September 29, 2026The base is the part of a hair system that sits against your scalp and holds the hair. Its material affects how the system looks, feels, attaches and how it should be cared for. Most systems use a skin base, a lace base, or a mix of both.
Skin bases
Skin (also called poly or PU) bases are made from a thin, flexible polymer film.
- Why men choose them: generally simple to handle, attach with tape or adhesive, and clean.
- Look: thin skin bases are designed to blend closely with the scalp and give a clean hairline.
- Keep in mind: skin is less breathable than lace, and the thinnest bases are more delicate.
Lace bases
Lace bases use a fine mesh (for example French lace) with hair tied into it.
- Why men choose them: breathable and lightweight — often preferred for warm climates and active routines.
- Look: a lace front can create a natural-looking hairline.
- Keep in mind: lace is more delicate and needs gentle handling and cleaning.
Hybrid bases
Hybrid systems combine lace and skin areas in one base, aiming to balance breathability with easier handling.
Which is right for you?
If simple upkeep is your priority, look at skin (Everyday, Long-Lasting). If comfort and breathability matter most, look at lace (Breathable). If you want a balance, consider Hybrid. Our quiz can help you narrow it down.
