What Is a Skin Base?

September 30, 2026

A skin base — also called a poly or PU base — is a thin, flexible polymer film that sits against the scalp. Hair is attached to it, and the system is secured with tape or adhesive.

Why thickness matters

Skin bases come in different thicknesses, measured in millimeters. As a general rule, thinner bases look more natural but last less; thicker bases last longer.

  • Thinner bases (for example 0.06mm, our Everyday) blend very closely with the scalp for a natural-looking hairline, but are more delicate and need replacing sooner.
  • Slightly thicker bases (for example 0.08mm, our Long-Lasting) are easier to handle and more durable.

Strengths

  • Generally simple to attach, remove and clean
  • A clean, natural-looking hairline
  • A common starting point for first-time wearers

Trade-offs

  • Less breathable than lace
  • The thinnest bases are more fragile
