What Is a Hair System?

September 30, 2026

A men's hair system — also called a hairpiece, toupee or non-surgical hair replacement — is hair attached to a thin base. The base sits on the scalp and is secured with tape or adhesive, and a stylist cuts the hair in to blend with your own.

What it is — and isn't

A hair system is a cosmetic option that changes how your hair looks. It is not a medical treatment and does not treat, cure or reverse hair loss.

The main parts

  • Base: the material that sits on your scalp — skin (PU), lace, or a mix. See Skin vs. Lace.
  • Hair: type (for example Indian or European human hair), length and density.
  • Ventilation: how the hair is attached to the base, such as V-loop or knots.

What owning one involves

Your system arrives uncut; a stylist experienced with hair systems cuts it in and installs it. You'll clean it regularly and replace it when it wears out. Read How Do I Maintain It?
